Theory Intensive Courses

Theory Intensive Courses

This summer I held two Theory Intensive Courses for groups of 2 and 3.
As a teacher, I absolutely loved it.

What is a Theory Intensive Course? A Theory Intensive Course is a fast-track to study, prepare, and complete a theory exam in just 2 week’s time. Each class is 3 hours long, the courses is completed in 6 sessions or less leading up to the Theory Exam Date in which all students were readily prepared. (3 sessions per week)

Theory Intensive Courses saw the entirety of the Theory 1 Requirements met and learned and with outstanding results. Classes included interactive games using iPads and tablets, the completion of several practice exams, and one “mock exam” to finish off the course. Healthy (and sometimes not too healthy) snacks were provided – ranging from Fruit Bars and Granola Bars to Timbits and Cake Pops, as well as child-friendly drinks to stay hydrated.

We also listened to a Classical Music playlist during long exercise work and breaking up the work load with fun Piano clips from YouTube, there were so many ways to not make the classes feel so long, all the while staying right on track with their studies.

I decided to run Theory Intensive Courses in Summer so my students going into Grade 5 Piano and higher would not have any theory work during their academic year. They will be spending their time and focus on their practical requirements, technical tests at the piano, and keyboard harmony as those become more demanding on the student and require more time in lesson and at home.
After teaching theory this way to these two groups, I believe this is how I will run all theory exam prep from now on – almost like a music theory camp. I lucked out with amazing students who were not only extremely bright for their age but also respectful and genuinely happy to be learning these new musical concepts. The environment was always positive and light, all the while “keeping it real” with these preteens.

I can only hope to leave them with a positive attitude towards music theory in the future!
