The Practice Chart Challenge

The Practice Chart Challenge

The importance of practicing cannot be stressed enough when it comes to learning how to play the piano and mastering the instrument. Consistent and focused practice goes a long way as the expression “Practice makes perfect” really proves itself to be true.
To encourage my students here at Sonata Piano Studio into daily practices, I began a “Did I Practice?” Gold Star Chart in my studio where students who have properly filled out their Practice Chart throughout the week receive a Gold Star at their lesson. Once the student has reached five Gold Stars he or she will then have their lesson on the Grand Piano in the Studio Space #2. (See Photos below)

It is also a great display for students to track their accomplishments and watch as their fellow peers progress with their practices as well.
After five weeks have passed since the beginning of The Practice Chart Challenge, I can proudly say that almost all of my 29 students will receive their lesson at the grand piano after five consecutive weeks of good at-home practices.

Here is the Individual Beginner Student’s Practice Chart found at the bottom of every Weekly Lesson Assignment sheet to be filled out weekly. Checking off the days is acceptable for beginner students. Pre-grade 1 level and higher level students are required to write in the number of minutes practiced for each practice day. Also note that Weekly Assignment Sheets will vary depending on the student’s level in piano.
